Summary: The following article features Peter Haas, who actually works in robotics at Brown University, who is afraid of robots. The example of how to train a model to classify wolf and Husky illustrates that there exists bias in the data set that was fed to the algorithm. This example proved the importance of researchers/developers who working on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to know their data and what they are doing. In the example of COMPAS, the Wisconsin State Supreme Court ruled that the COMPAS has to be used “properly” but the defendant could not inspect the source code of COMPAS. Therefore, Peter urged in the speech that we need to demand standards of accountability, transparency, and recourse in AI systems. The regulation should be caught up with the fast development of new technologies and just as Peter said the only thing we need to fear is ourselves.
