Summary: The following article discusses how many sports clubs are wanting for their own athletes to have a speedy physical recovery in order to continue to start them on the pitch. James Wilson, who worked for Rotherham United, used analytics and data on the sleeping habits of some of the club players in order to better the sleep quality of each player. While some players were skeptical of the data being collected, they were told it was for the purpose of improving physical recovery. It is nice to have ways for a club or team to try their best to do things that would benefit the team, however, one ethical issue with this specific example is that if the club is capable of tracking and collecting sleeping data through a wrist strap or ring, then they are capable of collecting other data such as their location. Some players would feel as if their privacy is being ignored if they are having to provide certain data to their club or team. So it is important to remember that as data scientists, we may try or want to collect data for one purpose but we may be open to collecting and using other data that affect the privacy rights of individuals in our population.
