Summary: The following article provides a brief overview of how governments could and should be involved in the regulation of data ownership. Unlike so many other aspects of our lives that are regulated, data remains one of the most unregulated aspects of peopleโ€™s lives, making it so much easier to abuse data that is collected on people. The article defines the main problems in data ethics to be privacy, lack of transparency, bias and discrimination, lack of governance and accountability, each of which drastically affects the individualโ€™s whose data is being collected. The article also points out that many governments are lacking a procedure to check for ethical processes in data analytics, even though governments have the power to create legislation, as well as having much collected much data on their own citizen. Lastly, the article offers some insights into how some governments have approached data ethics, and what steps forward need to be taken to make data analytics more ethical.
