Summary: The following article describes how data science is currently one of the most attractive jobs due to job availability and competitive salaries, but it has a diversity problem. Only 15% of data scientists are women and as data science professionals advance in their careers, the number of women gets lower. Similar trends can be seen for other underrepresented groups. Taking a look at enrollment data for data science programs, there does not seem like a rapid shift. Some of the factors going into these stats are the lack of early STEM education for underrepresented groups, the lack of representation currently in the field, and the exclusive workplace culture. Diverse companies are consistently more productive and profitable. There are many events and organizations dedicated to improving diversity.
