Summary: The following article discusses how undergrad training in data science was found to be subpar in training students in the proper use of ethics in data science. In the study, undergraduate curriculums were compared with expectations for ethical training specified by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine; and found that only 50% of programs required students to take a course involving ethics. This is problematic because it could directly result in the production of a workforce that lacks the tools necessary to practice data science in an ethical manner, as evidenced by the multitude of high-level scandals involving major companies such as Facebook and Microsoft. Without an emphasis on including this training in education for future data scientists, these problems could be compounded quickly.
