Summary: The following blog post defines the concept of ethics in data science and emphasizes the importance of data privacy and ownership. Companies and organizations collecting and analyzing an individual’s information must have prior consent for collection that transparently informs the individual how that information is being used. The blog gives some recent examples of unethical data practices such as OKCupid’s 2016 data release where even though users’ profile information was public, sharing it explicitly was not right. Another example mentioned was the Robinhood Data Breach in 2021 that affected over 5,000,000 users with email addresses, names, and phone numbers were stolen.
