An international team of researchers call for oversight because machines are capable of making choices more objectively than humans. They call for being able to explain algorithms come to the conclusions that they do. The researchers advise that machine learning algorithms be evaluated against traditional approaches before they are used in clinical research. Only then can they complement clinician decision making rather than replacing it.
