Summary: This article addresses concerns with sports statistics. They discuss these concerns from multiple angles, but the discussion that intrigued me the most was consent in data collection. When many think of sports statistics, they think of its use in professional sports, but it is not limited to just professionals. If you have ever been to a local youth baseball game, you have likely seen someone keeping statistics. The question then comes: did these youth players and parents consent to the keeping of statistics, and how are these statistics being used? Are they used to find areas for individual improvement, or are they used to decide playing time? These essential questions can be applied to a whole range of data collection questions. As data scientists, we must make it clear what the usage of data is when asking for consent to collect the data.
