Data Privacy and Consent

Summary: In the following video, Fred Cate discusses consumer consent during data collection. Frequently, consumers technically consent to their data being collected and used, but the complex legal and technical jargon in privacy agreements makes it incredibly difficult to know what they are consenting to. Ideally, companies should be transparent when asking for consent during data collection. However, when these technically worded privacy agreements make that near impossible, Dr. Cate proposes that companies ensure that they are good stewards of the data that they have. The data should be secured, personal information should be hidden, and the data should be used with the consumer in mind.
