Summary: The following article discusses how the metaverse is the idealized next version of the internet where users can share digital experiences using real-world currency. Users can use their money to watch movies, attend concerts, and shop together – essentially, a digital world. If our world did not generate enough data, imagine how traceable and how much companies can collect data from us in a digital landscape. The amount of data that a metaverse can manage would be unprecedented. The main concern is how that data will be collected, how it will be ethical, and how the data collection and usage will be transparent to the users. The unfortunate start of reality is that technology will move faster than the written law, so there is all the more responsibility placed on companies to behave ethically. Companies need to put people first, starting with their own employment. Actively targeting minority groups enables more excellent representation and a set of diverse talent and ideas, which will help establish a company culture of inclusivity. If employees feel like their voices can be heard and taken into serious consideration, then ethical considerations conversation can take place. Additionally, companies need to educate all of their employees on how to manage and use data to protect the data they have collected. Even at these basic steps, companies should strive for more and go well beyond the industry standard to hopefully motivate other companies to do the same because consumers can have greater trust in these companies.
