Summary: The following article makes a point that often unethical use of data results from a lack of digital literacy or little awareness of the implications of digital technologies being used. The author makes a point that ethics and compliance are different things. While compliance simply means “adhering to a strict set of rules,” ethics means “doing what is good.” There are 4 key ethical themes at play when using data: transparency, accountability, privacy, and bias. These themes impact the data at all stages of a data science pipeline, be it the acquisition of data, the processing, or the monetization/use of the data. This resource can serve as an excellent starting point for small or new organizations to ask the right questions and “doing what is right” with their data.
