Summary: The following article talks about how algorithms and predictive models in health care and criminal justice can change the trajectory of someone’s life. Caslee provides two important resources for the audience to learn more about solving AI biases. First, Renee Cummings’ work with “Humanity in AI” in criminal justice. Cummings uses the term “algorithmic authenticity” to describe the mindful process of acknowledging where biases exist and exploring the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion when developing creative technology solutions. Second, Hiwot Tesfaye’s work in the healthcare domain. Hiwot explained that awareness of the potential for bias, particularly around issues tied to race, is the first and most critical step to improving the accuracy of health care algorithms. The author also talks about what we should do differently to mitigate these issues.
