Summary: The following article describes how it is easy for companies to set aside ethics issues and ignore biases in AI to pursue a higher goal of profits and success, and the honest, diligent data scientists who take the time to carefully prepare their algorithms to prevent bias often goes unnoticed. However, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and Amazon are seeking to award these humble data practitioners who are doing things the right way, likely at the cost of revenue and time. This is through the Fairness in AI funding program that has now reached its third round of awards. This program shows us that we can still make discoveries and advancements in science without sacrificing critical data ethics questions.
