On Data Ethics: An Interview with Jacob Metcalf

Author: Jeff Kampfe

Publisher: Markkula Center for Applied Ethics

Publication Year: 2018

Summary: In the following article, Jeff and Jacob discuss the need for ethicists and social scientists to be employed by big data companies as a manner of ethical governance and consulting. Jacob talks about how all data scientists should have a solid understanding of the context behind their work, and what effects their work may have on people. He also talks about how he thinks all data should be “on the clock,” meaning that after a period of time (ex. a user leaving Facebook), data should expire and become unavailable.
