Summary: The following article speaks about the bias of search engines. If you were to look for images of a “professor” or “CEO” you would find images of older white males. If you looked for images of a “Nurse” or “Teacher” you would get images of younger females. Given that most CEOs are white males and only 4% of Fortune 500 CEOs are women, it is easy to see perhaps why some image results on Google are biased against women. This article said that the images used by Google are a reflection of the world we live in. The images are based on what we may see in the real world. However, this should serve as a lesson for all Data Scientists because it should not let certain characteristics be biased towards one group or another. Even though there may be less represented groups within our data, a model should not favor the majority group, but rather have an equal balance for all groups represented.
