Summary: The following video starts off by discussing the importance of data and data scientists in today’s society outlining their power and influence. It then shifts to talking about the responsibility that comes with this power. Since data scientists and their models have such influence in modern society, they must be mindful of the real-world impact they are having on people. They must guard against intentional and unintentional biases. It then takes the examples of recidivism models and how they can be biased against people of color if they are trained on past data which itself contains bias. This can have a very negative impact on real people and it is the responsibility of data scientists to ensure this doesn’t happen.
