Summary: The following article discusses how biases and systems that routinely exclude and oppress have spread from the physical world into the technological world. TAPP Project, from the Harvard Kennedy School, works to ensure that emerging technologies are developed and managed in ways that serve the overall public good. It has 3 main principles: 1). Publishing leading-edge research: Technology’s advance is inevitable, but progress for all is not guaranteed. We have an obligation to foresee the dilemmas presented by emerging technology and to generate solutions to them; 2). Convening stakeholders: Effective solutions to technology-induced public dilemmas require a mix of government regulation and tech-sector self-governance. This can only be possible with strong and trusted linkages between the tech sector and government; and 3). Training and mentorship: Ensuring a future where public purpose drives innovation requires the next generation of tech leaders to act; training the next generation to implement sustainable solutions and keep innovating.
