Summary: The following article talks about the “data divide” that exists between those who have access to artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithmic data technologies and people who do not. The data divide can affect who benefits from AI and who will not and the article demonstrates that structural racism inherent in American society is a major driver of this. A key point is made that framing data as ‘objective’ can inadvertently hide discriminatory activities in the data collection process. Finally, the authors warn that measures need to be put in place, whether legal or personal, to account for structural racism, which many datasets inadvertently have. One way to mitigate this is through the collection of ethnicity data to aid the use and collection of data for the main variables in the data set.
