Summary: The following article discusses how over the past few years, the question of how to address ethical problems relating to data has become prevalent, and industry leaders are starting to take note of the magnitude of this problem. While taking action quickly may seem like the best thing to do, this problem does not have a quick fix, and starting with conversations about artificial intelligence (AI) ethics may be a more productive start. At minimum, Blackman and Ammanath recommend having technologists, legal/compliance experts, ethicists, and business leaders at the table when starting this discussion. Once the team has been assembled, the group should define the organization’s AI ethical standards, and then identify the gaps between the company’s current position and the standards it set. Finally, the group should discuss the sources of the problems and operationalize solutions. While taking action is obviously the most difficult part, no truly effective solution can be found without first thoroughly discussing the source of the ethical problems and planning a best course of action.
