Summary: The following article contains an interview with Anima Anandkumar, a professor of computing at CIT & senior director of machine learning research at Nvidia, who focuses on the need for more complex modeling to handle social interactions. She advocates for a sort of Hippocratic oath for artificial intelligence (AI) research, saying how important it is to always be questioning how our research impacts the world. The fact that we have been taught to believe we can trust machines (i.e., basic calculations are always right) means that we now need to challenge that when building algorithms. She also mentions the importance of mentorship in AI for underrepresented communities in order to make AI research a more accessible place for all groups.
