Summary: The following article discusses how data science has increased rapidly; however, the concerns around the ethical use of it by organizations have risen alongside it. We have seen examples of concerns in different realms, algorithms accepting and denying bank loans, scanning resumes, cookies to monitor behaviors, and airlines to decide on differential pricing for individuals based on needs. These examples bring the social cost of wrong decisions, bias, privacy, and exploitation of individuals. 5 areas we can question include: 1). Unfair discrimination; 2). Reinforcing human biases; 3). Lack of transparency; 4). Privacy; and 5). Consent and power.
