Summary: The following article describes how with the rise of legalized sports gambling, the authors point out the rise of data ownership, privacy, collection, and security practices that must accompany this. In legal states, sports gambling takes place almost exclusively via online platforms rather than at casino desks or windows, leaving the door open for cybersecurity threats that could lead to monetary losses and data breaches for both sportsbooks and their users. Both financial and identity related data are often required to bet with a book, and these can thus be obtained via these cybersecurity attacks, leaving online casinos and sportsbooks bearing a great deal of responsibility for protecting their users’ data.
