Amazon Schooled on AI Facial Technology By Turing Award Winner

Summary: The following article details 26 artificial intelligence (AI) researchers calling for Amazon to stop selling their AI facial recognition software to police departments. The group joined together after a study came out that the AI software had higher predictive error rates for darker-skinned women. The American Civil Liberties Union ran a test and falsely matched 28 members of Congress with mugshots. In response, Amazon said their software was not tested in the right way and used one type of facial-AI as proxy for another. Unlike Amazon, IBM and Microsoft were able to reproduce the original study’s data and used it to improve their system.
