What Star Wars Can Teach Us About Cyber Ethics

Author: Dan Lohrmann

Publisher: Security InfoWatch

Publication Year: 2016

Summary: The following article attempts at relating Star Wars to cyber ethics. It relates the “Dark Side” to data breaches. It first states that sometimes, we are the enemy, and that not all cyber attacks come from foreign hackers. The author says to be aware that just because we are being trained with ethics while we are young, we will be tested down the road with opportunities in data that are not ethical, and could “switch to the dark side,” like Darth Vader. The article acknowledges that security staff have a lot of responsibility when it comes to handling others’ data, because they have so much power when doing so. It really becomes a slippery slope. He warns the better you get as a cyber security expert, the farther you can go as a hacker, and the greater the temptation will be. He does a decent job at relating it to a jedi and saying that your ethics, values, and beliefs will inevitably be tested in cyber security. He gives advice to find a mentor and make yourself accountable. Dan is the Chief Strategy Officer at Security Mentor, Inc.
