Summary: The following article investigates the importance of data privacy and ethics in a world of rising cybercrime. The author argues that now more than ever, data privacy and its ethical use is a moral obligation to consumers. The author goes on to describe steps to achieve both at an organization. As far as privacy is concerned, the article lists 3 steps for achieving it: 1). Embed privacy in data collection; 2). Accommodate many devices, including bring-your-own-devices securely; and 3). Scale protection with the ever-growing data. As far as ethics is concerned, the author names the following suggestions: have empathy when making decisions about individuals, let users take ownership of their data, be transparent about what data is being collected and why and finally, evaluate data collection and application processes to promote equality.
