Summary: The following resource explains what exactly biometric data is, why it is important, and why it is even more important to protect it. Along with that, it explains the progression of laws signed in to produce this kind of data and prevent its use in unethical ways. The uniqueness, immutability, and use as an identifier of biometrics make them particularly dangerous in the wrong hands and warrant protection via laws like the Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA). Despite this, not every state has equal rigor in their biometric privacy requirements if they have any at all, and there have been a number of lawsuits against large corporations over illegal or unethical use of biometric data.
