Summary: The following article discusses how big data plays an increasingly important role in food safety. This paper identifies potential sources of information that can be used to support food safety including satellite imagery of crops and social media postings about potential food borne illnesses. Blockchain technology can be used to track shipments of produce, meat, and grains to support ethical reporting of source and ingredients. Food safety and ethical practices in labeling are a growth area for data science practices.
