Summary: The following news article describes how an Amazon AI algorithm was trained on data submitted by amazon applicants which mainly came from men. This led to it teaching the system to prefer male candidates and it started to penalize CVs that included the word “women.” Though they had the best intentions and didn’t train the algorithm to do this intentionally, this is a great example of why we need to be proactive in thinking of the negative consequences of our data tools.
